{"id":42,"date":"2022-12-08T15:08:18","date_gmt":"2022-12-08T15:08:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.opennetworkedlearning.se\/karingraf\/?p=42"},"modified":"2022-12-08T15:08:18","modified_gmt":"2022-12-08T15:08:18","slug":"relevance-of-open-education-for-economy-and-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.opennetworkedlearning.se\/karingraf\/2022\/12\/08\/relevance-of-open-education-for-economy-and-society\/","title":{"rendered":"Relevance of open education for economy and society"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In our group work for topic four we have worked on a real case scenario by advising a client on the development of a MOOC (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opennetworkedlearning.se\/onl222\/2022\/12\/we-need-your-help-will-we-get-hired-topic-4\/\">we-need-your-help-will-we-get-hired-topic-4<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In the last few weeks, a possibly important aspect of open education has occurred to me out of an ongoing public discussion in Switzerland:<br \/>\ndue to the shortage of skilled workers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/business\/job-market_skilled-worker-shortage-worsens-in-switzerland\/45398580\">skilled-worker-shortage-worsens-in-switzerland<\/a>), there is a discussion in the media and at the political level about the fact that too many academics work part-time and thus give too little back to society (by workforce, taxes) after an expensive, subsidised course of study (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzz.ch\/schweiz\/die-studenten-vergeuden-ihre-zeit-ld.1684865\">die-studenten-vergeuden-ihre-zeit<\/a>).<br \/>\nI work part time myself and am convinced that it is a necessity these days (especially, if you want to motivate more parents to work while raising a family).<\/p>\n<p>Can open (online) education, e.g. with MOOCs be a chance here, when<br \/>\na) through synergies (reduced development and supervision costs), education costs could be reduced, thus financed with less tax money?<br \/>\nb) more people can benefit from higher education (access for different social classes and minorities)?<\/p>\n<p>Or is it, on the other hand, even less accessible for underprivileged students because of the requirements to participate<br \/>\n(availability of hard- and software, digital literacy, missing supportive social network etc.)?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-46\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opennetworkedlearning.se\/karingraf\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/180\/2022\/12\/14442769832_67a5ffdb67_c-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.opennetworkedlearning.se\/karingraf\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/180\/2022\/12\/14442769832_67a5ffdb67_c-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.opennetworkedlearning.se\/karingraf\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/180\/2022\/12\/14442769832_67a5ffdb67_c-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.opennetworkedlearning.se\/karingraf\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/180\/2022\/12\/14442769832_67a5ffdb67_c-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.opennetworkedlearning.se\/karingraf\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/180\/2022\/12\/14442769832_67a5ffdb67_c.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Is our school system ready to prepare primary school pupils for online higher education?<\/p>\n<p>I am aware that open education is not necessarily cheaper and more accessible, but I think the potential is huge.
