Topic 5: Lessons learnt – future practice

During my participation in the ONL course, I have gained valuable insights and knowledge that will greatly influence my teaching practice. One of the most important things I have learned is the significance of online participation and digital literacies. The course has highlighted the importance of fostering a sense of community and meaningful interactions among online learners. I now understand the value of incorporating opportunities for collaboration and socialization in the course design, which can greatly enhance the future of education.

Another takeaway is the need for flexibility and adaptability in changing learning environments. The state-of-the-art educational practices and the importance of incorporating new technologies and pedagogical approaches to the education system have been made clear. As a result, I am now more prepared to meet the needs of modern education by incorporating more collaborative tools and methods into my teaching practice.

Furthermore, the course has deepened my appreciation for online blended learning. I have gained a comprehensive understanding of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) of online learning. This understanding will shape my future educational endeavors as I strive to create engaging and inclusive learning experiences.

Collaborating in an online PBL group has been both challenging and rewarding. It has required strong communication skills, time management, and flexibility to work with team members from diverse backgrounds and time zones. However, it has also provided a valuable opportunity to learn from others, exchange ideas, and gain new perspectives. I have realized the importance of effective collaboration in enhancing the overall learning experience.

Looking towards the future, there are several valuable insights and takeaways that I will carry with me. Firstly, I have recognized the importance of incorporating socialization and collaboration into course designs, even in traditionally less-collaborative subjects like engineering basic courses. Creating opportunities for interaction and community-building can greatly enhance the learning experience.

Additionally, the ABC method that we applied for Topic 4 in my BPL group was a valuable tool that I plan to continue using. It will help me update my existing online courses and effectively design new courses that I will be responsible in the future.

Furthermore, the course has highlighted the benefits of open learning and sharing, as well as the associated limitations and opportunities. This awareness will guide my future practices, promoting a more inclusive and collaborative approach to learning and knowledge dissemination.

Finally, the course has given me an opportunity to moderate online group discussions. This skill will help me facilitate engaging interactions among learners in future online learning environments.

In conclusion, the ONL course has been a transformative learning experience. The insights gained, coupled with the practical skills acquired, will positively influence my teaching practice moving forward. The course has also showed me the SWOT of online education, enabling me to examine the benefits of technology and collaboration while addressing the challenges and ethical considerations that arise. I am thus eager to explore ways to make my teaching and learning approaches more flexible and adaptable, capable of meeting the evolving needs of learners and educational contexts.
