The more you give away, the less you have.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>.. You&#8217;ve worked so hard, keep it for yourself.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>.. There is no free lunch in this world. If someone gives you a gift, you should return it in some way and don&#8217;t owe a favour.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There was much deterrence in sharing one&#8217;s thoughts and vulnerability openly for fear of losing &#8220;face&#8221;.\u00a0There was probably a scarcity mindset because life was hard. This cultural context and legacy is fundamental in understanding the barrier to open educational practices (OEP) in this region. As with any cultural change, it will take decades for educators to\u00a0incorporate open education in their pedagogical beliefs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-1 overflow-hidden\">\n<div class=\"react-scroll-to-bottom--css-xhpkv-79elbk h-full dark:bg-gray-800\">\n<div class=\"react-scroll-to-bottom--css-xhpkv-1n7m0yu\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-center text-sm dark:bg-gray-800\">\n<div class=\"group w-full text-gray-800 dark:text-gray-100 border-b border-black\/10 dark:border-gray-900\/50 bg-gray-50 dark:bg-[#444654]\">\n<div class=\"text-base gap-4 md:gap-6 md:max-w-2xl lg:max-w-xl xl:max-w-3xl p-4 md:py-6 flex lg:px-0 m-auto\">\n<div class=\"relative flex w-[calc(100%-50px)] flex-col gap-1 md:gap-3 lg:w-[calc(100%-115px)]\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-grow flex-col gap-3\">\n<div class=\"min-h-[20px] flex flex-col items-start gap-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">\n<div class=\"markdown prose w-full break-words dark:prose-invert light\">\n<h3>Implementing Open Educational Practices (OEP)<\/h3>\n<p>From our ONL group discussions, it seems to me that an institutional push would probably most effective in kickstarting these practices, for example, if trainings are provided on <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/get-cc-savvy\/breaking-cc-licenses\/\">Creative Commons Licenses<\/a>, time-off given to create open educational resources etc.<\/p>\n<p>To encourage more educators to share their teaching resources, it may be helpful to provide them with more opportunities to collaborate and connect with other educators internally and globally, as well as to educate them on the benefits and best practices of sharing resources.<\/p>\n<p>An institutional repository can be a good stepping stone to the next level of opening up to a wider audience.<\/p>\n<p>To sustain these OEP efforts, findings in a study that surveyed five higher educational institutions in Canada had these in common:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080\">Advocacy (Benefits)<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>For the students &#8212; saving on textbooks<\/li>\n<li>For the faculty members &#8212; enhanced teaching and learning; social justice; feedback from wider audiences; career advancements<\/li>\n<li>For the institution &#8212; increased recognition and reputation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080\">Policy<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>Formulate guidelines as a foundation, governance and driver of the initiative<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080\">Leadership<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>Visible support from senior administration<\/li>\n<li>Develop faculty and student leadership to extend the support of the initiative<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080\">Institutional Culture<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop organisational structures for collaboration across units<\/li>\n<li>Commitment of resources<\/li>\n<li>Deeper conversations with people across the institution<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"w-full h-32 md:h-48 flex-shrink-0\">\n<p>In the longer term, there are suggestions that the government may need to step in with a national strategy and to continue providing funding and resources.
