Final reflection

This is my last reflection on the course. Time went by so fast and it is somehow sad that the course will finish now, not seeing the group members again. But let´s start to answer the questions.

  • What are the most important things you have learned through your engagement in the ONL course? Why?
  • It is quite difficult for me to state the most important things I have learned in the ONL course. I knew a lot on the topics but there is always a way to dig in and to improve in the requested areas. So, I learned a lot in general, this means that I gained much in every area, not only focusing on the content which we discussed. So, I gained valuable knowledge e. g. moderation, in the way you can conduct moderations in a larger group, on disturbances and how to solve them, I have read interesting reflections, I got to listen to nice lectures, I participated in twitter and much more. All together is one big learning. And I used WordPress and tried to create a nice looking site.
  • How will your learning influence your practice?
  • I think it is one step further on a journey I started some years ago and probably and hopefully will never end as it is very interesting. I think I gained more experience in applying tools and I will be more confident what is very desirable. I got to know many new tools and I got a deeper understanding how and when to use these.
  • What are your thoughts about using technology to enhance learning/teaching in your own context?
  • Yes, this is what I studied as well. Technology provides a lot of options to organize learning and teaching differently. At the same time tools are often a challenge even if you don´t think they would be one. As well in the university course I attend where I would suggest that usual tools are well known and therefore no problem I was confronted with some surprises. So, it is necessary to explain them beforehand and to use low threshold tools. But the use can make fun and e. g. the production of relevant output is often very nice. In the same time, you are enhancing your digital literacy which has to be enhanced step by step and this progression should never stop.
  • What are you going to do as a result of your involvement in ONL? Why?
  • I don´t know what I am going to do exactly with the results, but I gained as well experience how you can design a ONL that works for example. This is a very important experience as I think in future we will see more of these courses. 😊
  • What suggestions do you have (activities and/or in general) for the development of eLearning in your own teaching or context?
  • One suggestion is as mentioned to use low threshold tools and to explain them to the learners as there are often a lot of insecurities. The use of tools depends as well on the context of the learning situation. You have to choose them if they make sense not only for the purpose to use technology. As said by Jürgen Handke for the creation of an inverted classroom: “Didactics has to drive technology”. I think this is an important approach to keep in mind. As we learned on our university you need to have an educational purpose to e. g. produce videos etc. If it is easier to do it in an analogue way do so. Often it will save you money. Therefore, you have to reflect when or if using them and what is the best way to do so. Additionally, it is a good approach to search literature in the relevant field and to look on the results. As well use didactic models or look what other institutions have produced or put on the internet. This can make it easier and mistakes can maybe minimized.

    Thanks Marion,
You describe a pragmatic position towards the use of digital technical support in the didactic approach. I would agree that the task to solve should be argued from “what is” in relation to “what ought to be” and to continuously work to refine ways of working. I appreciate your ideas of how to use your gains from ONL to enhance this process.
    Good luck

    Hi Marion,
Thanks for your final reflection. Yes, I too feel a tinge of sadness that I won’t be seeing my group members again.

After working together with different educators using a PBL approach, playing with different tools, seeing creativity of different groups, I too gained a bit more confidence after ONL222.

I am stuck on the fence wrt your point about using low threshold tools. I am supportive because if tools is overly complex or if target audience IT literacy is low, its detrimental.

However, as technology is getting better (UI, UX has improved dramatically) and end users are becoming more IT savvy and higher expectations, we might have to evolve with the times and use more powerful tools (e.g. Padlet is perfect for low threshold. but if the end users can stomach it, Miro does so much more).

Well, that’s my 2 cents. Thanks for sharing your final reflection. Here’s mine in case you are keen.
