“Social learning theory emphasizes the importance of observing and modeling the behaviors, attitudes, and emotional reactions of others in shaping one’s own behavior.” – Albert Bandura

In this topic, we investigated the different learning approaches that are required for social learning to take place. We identified three learning approaches: vertical, horizontal and hybrid for teaching and learning.

We found that there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. It is best to use ad-hoc evaluation when deciding on which approach would be suitable, this is largely dependent on the course design. We also found that each class type by its nature leans towards a specific approach, so each case needs to be evaluated on a standalone basis, this is demonstrated in the different case studies that were relevant to our courses.

The hybrid approach is a favourable approach for teaching and learning due to its flexibility and the fact that a lot of the course designs do include some elements of this approach. Social learning is a key consideration to factor into account when implementing each of the approaches as we found that social learning goes beyond just the classroom or course and extends in the workplace realm too. Lastly, the orientation of a class can vary over time according to the requirements and needs of students, this is demonstrated in an empirical case study where Master’s theses that one of our members discussed and focused on how certain requirements and needs are important factors that could lead to successful complete their theses.
