Whilst online learning could be
an efficient way to balance work life and study life, many challenges arise
which may hinder one from completing a course successfully. Some of the
challenges include; lack of social interaction, delayed responses, learning
curve for the less technically savvy, browser compatibility, lack of time
management skills and motivation.

When it comes to online studying,
minimal in-person contact with professors and classmates are experienced.
Lecturers may put in intensive work and time to design the seminar however
students may not be equipped with technical proficiency the interpret the
course material (Swan, G.). Time management is quiet a difficult task for
online students, as online courses require a lot of time and motivation. Many
individuals who are employed at a full-time job and are studying online may
find it tough to multi-task due to their several daily commitments. One could
overcome this challenge by creating a schedule planner and by setting reminders
for tasks and assignments due in advance. It is essential for online students
to be self-motivated. Unfortunately, majority online students lack this
requirement. ‘Giving up’ has been a common trend in online studying. A positive
attitude and determination will help to overcome this challenge. Students need
to think positively, envision the bigger picture, and the benefits of
completing a course successfully.

Unfortunately, lack of computer
literacy is a prominent factor which affects online studying. Yes, students are
generally tech savvy however many of them cannot work on elementary programs
such as Microsoft word, Microsoft excel and PowerPoint. Technological
proficiency is vital for online studying, therefore to overcome this leaning
curve students should sign up for basic computer literacy to enhance their
skills and prevent hindrances in online studying.

Technical issues and browser
compatibility; the sad reality is that many students are not provided with high
end technology and strong internet connection that online courses require.
Learning experience becomes problematic since some students do not even have
the resources such as a computer. Tactlessly, the only solution to this
challenge is for students to fully equip themselves before enrolling for online
courses or seek assistance in learning resource centres.

One of the challenges that arise is
the response rate. The responses to question are not always immediate when it
comes to online studying. While passive listening and note taking are excellent
methods of learning, it is vital to have discussions. Students with a
traditional style of learning may find it difficult to participate in online
discussions as it is not as effective as one on one discussions. To overcome
this challenge students, need to change to their traditional mindset to a
modern one. A modern learning approach will lead to successful online learning.

Overall, online learning is
decent, however it poses many challenges to students. A positive attitude and
self-motivation, computer literacy are the fundamental principles which make
online learning easy and fun.
