Learning in Communities

This topic was one of the fruitful topic during the course. Together with another member, Amanda based in South Africa, we led the topic. Over that , we have discussed though using different platforms including Padlet, whiteboard, Teams, Watsapp and etc. Each inlcudes specific characteristics with various features. This topic helped me at least to be exprt on how to use Padlet. I created wall and shared with other members. They simply could write a note and provide their comment for each topic or question. There are different features for Padlet that can be used for the class for the use of studetns to mind map and draw their thoughts either in group or individual. We discussed how to engage the student collaboratively in the class while we offer them different online platforms. Each platform could have pros and cons. Depending on the application, each may be used in different subjects. The matter was how to keep the students interactive during the class, to not get bored. Amanda introduced and shared with us an amazing guide titled “The ultimate guide to creating community in the vistural class” published by Top Hat. This book includes couple of interesting chapters helping teachers to motive and engage with students through online platform.I inspired by its chapter 2, whic is to get to know the student and their need before sharing any platform with them. I highly recommend you to read this handbook. It is free of charge and can be found from here.

Apart from that, we used some vidoes on YouTube channels, to learn how innovatively create a video clip. Finally, the idea of “pass the paper challenge” came to our mind by recommendation from Amanda. I also learnt how to make and edit video clip through this process. I used Animoto application and I highly recommend it. It is easy to use, free of chagre, user friendly, and with lots of features to create an amazing video clips.

In my own field, I have recently published a paper on the use of Social media in Disaster relief. The paper is the challenges of using social media platforms such as Telegram in disasters in order to ease or hamper the delivery of assistance to the people of need. This shows in our virtual world, there are learning opportunities even via social media platforms. The point is how effectively use such platforms. Herewith, you can get access to the paper:

Apart from that, community-based disaster risk management is another learning platform in the field of humanitarian logistics, that different actors can have cross-learning opportunities.
