Started as a teacher 20 years ago. At first I just wanted to teach and see how students develop in their high school years. What a wonderful opportunity to see how teenagers changes from the age of 14 years until 18. And that is not where it changed, students will still make contact and share how they achieve different goals in their lives.
After the first five years at the same school I wanted a different challenge and I start a new subject at the school. With the new subject I had to do some research and went to other schools in the area and ask for assistance and some guidance to help me how to develop the subject. After 10 years teaching and being part of a wonderful family with my husband and two son’s I enroll part time to do my honours degree in Education Management Law and Policy. After the first few months I decided that I newer want to stop studying.
What a wonderful opportunity to see how the subject was growing up to the point that I need another challenge and went from a government school to a independent school. With my honors degree at the last phase I start a new chapter in my life. After my honors degree I enroll for my Masters degree.
After five years at the independent school, I being asked to be the examiner for my subject for the Independent Examination Board (IEB) final matric exam. What a wonderful opportunity to grow as an educator and experience that level of development. After my three year contract pass, the subject specialist ask me to remain for another three years. By the time I started off as an Examiner I completed my Masters Degree and enrolled for my PhD.
In the school where I was teaching there was no room for promotion and I really felt stuck and need to start with something new. So at that stage I start to teach part time at the University of Pretoria as well as Varsity College. Doing my PhD, Teaching full time, setting the IEB Examination and also lecture at two Tertiary Institutions as a part time lecturer, I needed to make a decision regarding my future.
When I resign I was appointed at Varsity College as the Teaching and Learning Specialist. What a wonderful opportunity to work in a tertiary environment and see how I can assist lecturers to approve their teaching and learning skills and still be a lecturer. With my PhD in its final stage, I am thinking of the next challenge that I would like to start.
