Trying to work collaboratively on the topic of collaborative learning is like acting in a show about us acting in a show. I do not mean to get into a metaphysical discussion except to say how the experience doubles up both as a practice and a reflection on the subject matter. What it gives us is access to our subjective experiences while trying to work together. Subjective because it is that part of the flow of our consciousness, emotions and thoughts – much of which do not find themselves articulated to the group, no matter how open and respectful. Often, it is just that the moment has passed. Yet, paying attention to some of them gives us further clues to the realities of collaborative learning. How often have we held back – if only because the clocking is ticking away, or for fear of contradicting a colleague, again? Could this be the give and take in collaboration? How many times can we disagree before we become disagreeable? Perhaps here, the stakes aren’t exactly high. But what if there were more to lose? Like the difference between an A and a B, by your reckoning? Or perhaps winning that major contract or not? What if someone in the team was a superior who might have some say when the time comes for your review? Then again, what is the value of collaboration – if the best ideas do not materialise? These are issues we do not always think about despite the number of times we have been in such situations. Being on stage, watching how we act acting …. what a cool idea. But now what?

Learning in “Communities”?
