This has was quite an interesting topic for me especially because I am a newbie in online learning but the concept of collaborative approach in learning is part and parcel of my career as a research manager. The concept of collaboration is essential in context of contributing knowledge and resources as a team (doing things together) to obtain a common goal/purpose(community)
Collaborations are essential in networking. The interactions are key and intended to last beyond the project period. However this may not happen if the essential skills and resources required to effectively collaborate are lacking. In my view it is essential that certain parameters are taken into consideration before we decide which collaborative groups will be most beneficial to the learners. Levels of exposure to the subject matter, language barrier, lack of shared goals, digital literacy and differences in time zones for example can affect the level and quality of contribution/participation in a collaborative group. This may make some learners have feelings of frustration.
Online communities which are more focused would be preferable to me rather than an online learning network whose structure is pretty much undefined therefore has the potential of providing learners with overwhelming information.
