When I searched for the definition for Digital Literacy, I was spoilt for choice with the information I got, but the one I found that describes this new technological lingo is
in Education Week by Heitin (2016)who defines digital literacy as “the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills.”
Heitin (2016) views digital literacy as having three buckets:
- finding and consuming digital content
- creating digital content
- communicating or sharing it.
The user must be able to navigate in order to search for content in an online space.
I find that I am still a visitor instead of being a residence (https://youtu.be/sPOG3iThmRI) across all the digital platforms. I first felt overwhelmed setting up the digital platforms that was required. My biggest drawback is that I am an adolescent in this digital world, and I am still growing up with the ever-changing technology.
Even though we live in a society that is so digitally motivated I have yet to leave my digital footprint. My biggest fear for not doing it sooner is the privacy issues and not being confident enough. “What if my information is shared with others.”
Hopefully I will be able to overcome this fear and allow myself to expand my knowledge across the different digital platforms that is available and be confident enough to use these both in my work and personal life.
