In the course ONL201, the topic was online participation and digital literacies. One of the things we discussed a lot and that I thought was quite interesting was the Visitor and residence online mapping by Donna Lanclos, David White & Lawrie Phipps
Since I have a background where I have been researching in collaboration at a distance for more than 20 years, I considered myself quite experienced. Still, when I mapped myself in the matrix, it felt like several of the areas I was not so active in especially on the professional part.
Quick mapping of my most used tools. |
Privately I am quite active in many digital environments, several different forums, Facebook groups etc. but I have not been so active in my professional role.
Professionally, I am quite restrictive, and for example, have no public Facebook profile and share almost no job-related post there.
I use Linked In professionally, but very passively, and I see LI more like an address book where I get updates on my professional network, and I very rarely publish anything there.
However, I use Facebook quite actively professionally for our research group, and for the educational program for which I am responsible.
For a long time in the research group, we have used various tools to document our internal discussions such as internal blogs and web pages, as early as 2001, the intranet I was responsible was announced as one of ten winners in the Intranet Design Annual, published by web guru Jakob Nielsen at Nielsen / Norman Group. For many years, the research subject had a blog for disseminating information, which felt very important as several of our members were not in Luleå full time.
The blog was also used to document various types of development projects. It was a perfect place to store and share information but very tricky to upgrade as it was based on multiple legacy systems.
Today I feel no need to use more tools than I use right now because I don’t want to spend more time in the tools.
