The first topic on ONL 211 course was digital literacies, literacy itself is not a new topic. The Traditional literacy which mean the ability to read and write is well known. On the other hand, the digital ones were new terminologies for me. When I heard the terminology, I was wondering why it was in plural not singular so I start searching the term on google and found out that there are lots of types of literacies.
- Numerical Literacy which means to know how to deal with basic math and manage finances.
- Health Literacy which allow you to understand the health care system and things related to.
- Cultural Literacy is the ability to understand all nuances that come along with living or working in a particular society.
- Emotional Literacy refers to the ability to express one’s emotional state and communicate one’s feelings. A person with well-developed emotional literacy is therefore able to recognize and respond to the emotional states of others.
- Media Literacy which refers to understanding how to deal with all things related to media (TV, radio, movies. Social media etc…). And it apart of
- Digital literacies which is the ability to access, manage, understand, integrate, communicate, evaluate and create information safely and appropriately through digital technologies for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship. It includes competences that are variously referred to as computer literacy, ICT literacy, information literacy and media literacy (Ref: UIS/2018/ICT/IP51), it all represented here in a seven elements model according to JISC guide:
After knowing the meaning, I start at my PBL group to discuss how we want to approach this topic. We ended up trying to assess and improve our literacies. We found out lots of tests to help assess our digital literacies. It was really exciting to know my own strengths and weakness and what aspects and fields I should work on, its available if you want to check on Prezi presentation with the title (ONL211_PBL8_Topic1)
Another interesting idea I liked about this topic is the thought of visitors and residences that David S. white discusses on the webinar which is a new terminology for online engagement, and to know really how we are dealing with social applications into our life” formally and informally “ and I love to share my chart of using applications:
You also may try to make your own chart too.
At the end of this topic and as a summery, I was really surprised of how many different types of literacies in general there are, and I really find it useful for each person to try assess his own weakness and strengths and try out some tests for that purpose.
