After participating the ONL 191 curse I can recognize that the guiding method for the facilitators was based on the Five stages model. I could see the practical impact of the learning method for the students which was the Fish model. In between that, we have been applying the concept of emotions in the communities of inquiry.
I liked the way how we got introduced to the learning platforms on the connecting week. The first meeting face to face gave us confidence. On that occasion we got an introduction to the course and the FISH-model, we had the opportunity to ask questions and the chance to get to know each other among local participants. On the first topic we started to put into practice the course methods, choosing a moderator for the topic and the minutes writer. We worked on the collaborative learning contract and the FISH document, where we shared our thoughts and articles according to the FISH-model (Focus, investigate, share and reflection).
The concept of Visitors and Residents from David White on the first topic was very insightful about the personal or institutional approach to online learning and compared to traditional methods. It was also a god introduction to the different communication tools and the socializing methods and activities for education on the web communities. But more important perhaps is the awareness that participants may need to be guided during the residence transition from personal practices to the institutional context. I knew what literacy was about, but the term Digital Literacy was new for me. But it did not take long to contextualize the Pyramid Model of Digital Literacy Development in a pedagogical context.
The ideas of REMIX and sharing were very interesting and they where god topics for discussions among the group. We all agree about the importance of sharing with responsibility discussed on the topic about Openness and open learning. Creative Commons gave us insight into the different forms of copy rights, creating common licenses and free cultural works licenses. In the topic of Openness and Education and the Future, David Wiley describes the 4Rs (reuse, redistribute, revise and remix) and argues that without sharing knowledge there is no education and that expertise can be shared without being given away. He also pointed out that with the help of modern technology we have an unprecedent capacity to share as never before. Dave Cormier showed us that a MOOC is not just a course nor a school, but a way of learning in a networked world. It is an open event where participants connect, discuss, collaborate and engage in the learning process.
In topic thre we got an introduction to PLN (personal learning networks) by Kay Oddone which is basically a resume of earlier topics, talking about network learning, sharing and remixing, but making infancies on the personal driving on learning by the individual with the help of social software. Besides that, Kay makes a very interesting differentiation between online learning communities and online learning networks.
The topic four, about Design for Online and Blended Learning was very rich. The definition of the Emotional Presence in the CoI (Community of Inquiry) by Martha Cleveland-Innes and the Five Stage Model of Gally Salmon on the Online facilitation techniques were very interesting. I think that emotions are present on all the elements of CoI (the Social, Cognitive and Teaching presences) as well as in everything we do. I could rather add Digital Technology as a fourth presence keeping the Emotion Presence on the background of all other presences. I could see that the interactivity on the ONL has much to do with the Five Stage Model. In my work on this tocpic I made a comparation of the interactivity of both participants and facilitator on the ONL191, completing the five stages model into five blocks, where I combined the level of activity and interactivity of the facilitators and the participants.
All videos and articles in the ONL 191 are highly valuable. The whole course was a rich learning experience. The opportunity to participate as learner, gave me the chance to experience the emotional presence and the sense of community as students may feel about it on this kind of online learning tools and strategies. All this experience and knowledge gained will definitive be part of pedagogical projects on the future.
